Ung
Vai Meng was born in Macau where he studied drawing and watercolours
with master Kam Cheong Leng.
In 1986 he received a grant from the Cultural Institute of Macau to study painting
and engraving at the Oporto
College of Fine Arts. In 1991, with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian
Foundation, the Orient Foundation
and the Cultural Institute of Macau, he studied at AR.CO in Lisbon, completing
the Painting Course in 1992.
In 1995 he won the first prize for installation art at the 2nd Macau Biennial
Art Exhibition and from then until 1997
he won a total of forty prizes in local and foreign graphic art competitions
including Distinction, Gold and Silver
Prizes in the Publishing section and the Gold and Bronze Prizes in the Poster
section of the 1st Macau Design
Biennial Exhibition, the Asian Jury’s Prize at the HKDA Design 96 show,
and Distinction, Gold Prize in the Poster
section of the 2nd Macau Design Biennial Exhibition. He is a member of the Macau
Fine Arts Association and a
founding member of the Macau Friends of Culture Association. Ung Vai Meng is
also the Director of the Macau
Museum of Art.
